Australia has a point based immigration system for key Permanent Residence Visas, i.e. Skilled Nominated Subclass 190 Visa, Skilled Independent Subclass 189 Visa, etc.

There are four common categories/ Sub classes of Australia immigration:
  • Subclass 186 (employment nominated visa)
  • Subclass 189 – General PR (Permanent Resident)
  • Subclass 190 – PR with State Sponsorship with the condition that the person needs to stay initial 2 years in that particular province.
  • Subclass 489 - TR (Temporary Resident ) known as Regional State Sponsorship. This visa is for 4 years and after 3rd year the person can apply for PR by living over there itself.

There are separate demand lists for 186, 190 & 489 from different states. The nominated occupation must fall in the existing demand list of that particular state while lodging the case for State Sponsorship.

Total required points are 60 in either category. The Break up is as below:
  • Age : 30 points (Between 25-32 years) or 25 points (between 33 – 39 years)
  • Education : 15 points (Bachelors Degree/Masters Degree) or for PHD 20 points
  • Work Ex : 5/10/15 points (3/5/8 years Full Time relevant employment)
  • English : 10 /20points (IELTS 7/8 Band in each component of General Module).
  • State Sponsorship 05 Points (subclass -190)
  • Partner Skill : 05 points (For the favorable skill assessment result of spouse if required)
  • Regional State sponsorship : 10 Points (For Temporary visa only ie. Subclass – 489)

NOTE – For IT professional, the points for employment is calculated differently.

Australian Govt. Charges;
  • Skill Assessment Fee : AUD & 500 – 1000 (Before Skill assessment)
  • State Sponsorship Fee : AUD $ 175 – 350 (In case of state Sponsorship only)
  • Visa Processing Fees : AUD $ 3600(for applicant) (at the time of case filing in DIAC) AUD $ 1800 (For spouse) AUD$ 900 (for each child), Additional fee of AUD$ 4800 has to be paid to DIAC.
  • Total Average Processing Time - 8-12 months for IT and 12 -15 months for all other categories.

Australia PR Requirement

As already conveyed, Australia has got a point based immigration system. The process to get PR in Australia is a mix of online and offline activities. Let’s first explore the key Australia PR requirement.

- Arrange key documents: First of all, arrange the key documents to apply for PR in Australia. Apart from the routine travel and educational document, you would require the two main documents i.e.

  • English language proficiency test result (PTE ) or (IELTS)
  • Skill Assessment reported by a relevant assessing authority.

- Choose appropriate Visa: You would require choosing the right PR Visa category to apply. The most common PR visa categories are Subclass 189 (Non-sponsored visa), Subclass 190 (State Nominated Visa), Subclass 186 (employment nominated visa) Subclass 489 (Temporary Resudence) etc.

- Select an occupation from SOL. Once the relevant visa is chosen, you need to select an occupation from the Skilled Occupation List (SOL). If you are applying for non-sponsored, visa, you need to choose the occupation from the SOL of Australia, whereas, if you are applying for any state nominated visa, you need to choose an occupation from SOL of the particular Australian State.

- Apply in point based system: Once all the above things are done, it’s time to apply in the point based system of Australia. You need to submit Expression of interest (EOI) in the online Skill Select system of Australia mentioning your key profile details, i.e. age, education, work experience, language ability, etc. You will be given points for each of your profile factor. Your collective score must be at least 60 points to apply through the system. However, higher point score will certainly boost your chances of securing invitation to apply for visa.

- Health and Character Requirements: You must meet the health and Character requirements, i.e. you need to be medically fit and morally good in character. You would require providing relevant certifications as well, after going through the medical examination and character verification process.
